Moving With Children

Keep in mind that though you and your mover may be doing most of the work, you are the not only ones that are burdened by the entire moving and relocation experience. Your loved ones, too, have to cope. As such, you have to plan ahead to make sure that your family – most especially its youngest members – can deal with the transition as well as they possibly can.

Help Your Kids Adjust

Relocating with family members means you can't just think about how you are handling the move. You have to think of the welfare of the rest of your unit as well. And there's a lot to think about when you're moving with kids. After all, children can't be expected to handle the move as maturely as their parents, so you will have to help them get by. Some effort on your part can guarantee a happy new home when you move in with family.

Whether you're relocating with a child or moving children to a new home, there are a number of things you can do to facilitate the adjustment:

Inform your children of the move well in advance. This will give them ample time to get used to the idea.
Explore the neighborhood you're moving to along with your children. Do this, and the area will no longer seem foreign to your kids when you finally relocate.

It's important for children to have a familiar, parental figure with them when they first set foot onto a new place. Having you there can only give them a feeling of security.

Allow your kids the opportunity to say good-bye to their friends. By letting your kids play with their friends one last time, you grant them closure, and the feeling that they weren't abruptly cut off from the life they've come to know. Offer them further relief by assuring them that they will still be able to stay in touch with their friends.

Take the time to study the schools in your new neighborhood, and choose a school based on its education, facilities, and reputation for properly developing its students. Enroll your kids in your school of choice well before their first day.

File a request with the school administration for you and your kids to meet with teachers or to walk around the school. It's unlikely that they'll deny you, since it's fairly common to receive similar requests from other parents who are moving with children. Much like exploring your new neighborhood, this will prepare your kids for when they have to go to school on their own.

Encourage socialization by going to playgrounds, joining clubs or teams, or simply inviting the neighbors and their kids over for dinner. These simple steps can make it easier for your kids to make new friends.

Work As a Family

Don't worry if moving away with children seems to be a lot of work. The suggested steps above can actually be done by either or both parents. Moving in with children can be much easier to deal with if your partner also helps out.

You can avoid most of the difficulties associated with family moving and child relocation just by working together as a family. Focus on that, and you may even look forward to relocating with kids.
